Year: 2014

7 month update | Aidan

Size-wise:  Aidan weighs 20b (9kg/1.5stone). He is almost triple his birth weight!! I’m not sure on his length he won’t stay still long enough for me to find out!

Sleep: You still sleep through the night for 12-13 hours. The past week you’ve been waking around 6 but you will fall back to sleep when I take you into my bed (Oh such terrible parenting!). I am going to get a duvet for your cot and hopefully that will help.

Feeding: I am going to do an updated routine post soon but feeding hasn’t changed drastically. We have introduced a third solid feed and this means that you don’t take as much formula as you did.

Firsts This Month: You moved into your own room. You sleep so much better without anyone snoring waking you up (not me).

You had some chocolate biscotti for the first time. That went down an absolute delight!

You had your first Christmas which was far from pinterest perfect.

You rubbed Teegan for the first time which I think maybe a bigger deal for her than you. She wouldn’t be in the same room as you for the first few months so major progress.

You moved to your big boy carseat. Even though you’re a little young you were just too big for your other one. You definitely like this one better!

Developments: You can sit unaided for as long as you like. When you’re tired you just roll/dive onto your belly. It’s cute to see and has saved my arms a lot of pain.

You can crawl backwards and get onto your hands and knees as of late, Crawling in January perhaps?

You’ve developed a fake laugh which you pull out at the funniest times.

Likes: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse – It’s bizarre how much you love Mickey Mouse. Just seeing him, on TV, books, toy store and you get all excited.

20141227_105728

Teddy bears – you love to snuggle them in the car and before bed.

Dislikes:  Being on your own. You like to be able to see someone close by. That doesn’t make getting housework done impossible at all!

Nicknames: Buddy, Chicken, Buster.

What I’m Thankful For: Apart from a snuffly nose this past week you’ve been a very healthy baby. Everybody comments on how pleasant a baby you are, you always have a smile for people.

What I’m Looking Forward To:  Hearing you say Mama with out stretched arms. I know this will probably be when you’re upset or angry but since you’ve been born it’s something I’ve always looked forward to.

How Mommy’s Doing: My hair has almost stopped falling out. Woo – light at the end of a looong tunnel. Hopefully by next month it will have stopped completely.

2014 should have been….

2014 did not happen as I had planned it out.

2014 should have been my final year in college.

2014 should have been the year I found out what grade I would receive for my honours degree.

2014 should have been my last crazy wild college year.

2014 should have had several days of lie ins and late nights at parties.

2014 should have been my last year before I joined the grown up full-time working world.

In reality, 2014 turned out to be something way more exciting.

At the end of 2013 I realised what I thought was going to happen this year would be far from reality.
Once I found out I was expecting Aidan I knew college had to take a backseat. This I think was the hardest part of 2014, I loved my college course. Surprisingly, I loved chemistry. However, you cannot be in a lab when you’re pregnant due to obvious harmful chemicals so that meant that it was bye-bye to college for a little while. It means that I now won’t graduate until January 2016.

The crazy wild nights out I didn’t miss. I enjoy a night out but could turn one down just as easily. I hate spending lots of money on a night out and all you have to show for it is a headache and a face like thunder the next day. Lie ins are missed I must admit but I hear early nights are the new in thing these days.

I knew I wanted to be a scientist since I was about 14 but I knew I wanted to be a mother long before that.

2014 could have been many things. 2014 was the year I first became a Mom, that’s the best thing it could have been.

Aidan’s first Christmas

This year was Aidan’s first Christmas. This for me meant the return of all the magic which I had lost several years back. It meant Santa would be anticipated on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day would revolve around family.

Our Christmas wasn’t a perfect first Christmas by any account. Aidan started the morning by hitting his head against a door. Halfway through present opening he got totally over whelmed and cried. Opened some more presents, cried. Visited some family, cried. It’s safe to say that this year Aidan was not a huge fan of Christmas. He also had the sniffles so that may have been a contributing factor.

There are still so many presents yet to be noticed and played with but after such a ‘traumatic’ Christmas morning I think we might introduce them one at a time.

A got so spoilt and I honestly think he has almost every vtech toy available! Santa also brought a playpen, ball pit and Little Tikes Activity Garden. Overnight it went from an empty room to a fully functional playroom.

Aidan wasn’t the only person to get spoilt at Christmas. I was very fortunate to get a new MacBook Air, a 2015 planner, candles and so much chocolate!

Although presents are brilliant and they realistically have become the main part of Christmas I do like to put effort into sentimental things that will make more of an impression than a present. This year for  Clayton’s Christmas card from Aidan I got a footprint of Aidan’s foot and put it into his card along with this poem:

”Walk a little slower, Daddy.” said a child so small
”I’m following your footsteps and I don’t want to fall.

Sometimes your steps are very fast,
Sometimes they’re hard to see;
So walk a little slower Daddy,
for you are leading me.

Someday when I’m all grown up, you’re what I want to be.
Then I will have a little child who’ll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead just right,
and know that I was true;
So walk a little slower, Daddy,
For I must follow you.

I thought this was such a nice poem and he later admitted it almost brought a tear to his eye. I think I will get the footprint and poem made into a picture or canvas to put on the bedroom wall.

Although we didn’t have a pinterest perfect first Christmas, it was our first Christmas with Aidan and that definitely made it perfect for me.

I hope you all had a wonderful time with family and friends. And I hope you got spoilt from Santa too.

What we did on Friday!

Today has been full of several little things which all contributed to it being a very happy day so I thought I’d share it. Mainly because of the cute pictures!

Today marked the beginning of Clayton’s 4 days off. It will be nice to spend time together now because leading up to Christmas he will be working around the clock until lunchtime on Christmas Eve.

The day began with the boys going into town Christmas present shopping for me! I should have known then it was going to be a good day. I have no idea what they got except for a Yankee Candle because that’s a staple every year. It also meat that I got to stay in bed until 11am which NEVER happens!

When they got back Clayton said that the tiler couldn’t start our floor until Monday which was a little poo but after waiting a year a few days more wouldn’t kill me.

We put Aidan in his new bath seat. He is able to sit aided really well but not so good unaided making bathtime a complete bod workout lately. So, when I saw this seat in Smyths I had to get it (only €15!). It went down a hit, he was able to have a proper bubble bath and play with his toys.

Then came the downer of the day. 6 month injections with a different nurse who was less than friendly. Luckily, Aidan only cried for a second and then went back to laughing and smiling. He spent the rest of the day somewhat clingy and sleepy which I kind of enjoyed. He is so active now that he doesn’t ever just want to sit and cuddle so as much as I hate seeing him so unlike himself I selfishly loved the cuddles.

Later, I got an email to say I had won a personalised calender from Polagram and Little O and Me. A pre-Christmas present!

Aidan crawled – backwards!! Apparently it’s normal for babies to go backwards first, who knew?

We got a phone call to say our floor will be getting done tomorrow!!! I spent the evening ripping up the eye sore I’ve been subjected to for a year and being so thankful that I will have a lovely new, clean kitchen for Christmas!

Overall, Friday has been a good day. I can’t wait for next Friday, my best friend is coming home from Dubai for Christmas. We haven’t seen her since August so I can’t wait to catch up and spend time with her over the Holidays.

Hope everyone had a good Friday and a great weekend.

Childs Farm Giveaway

Some of you may have seen my tweet Monday night saying that I am now a Childs Farm brand ambassador. I am very excited to work with a brand that I have been a huge fan of since Aidan was born. If you read my What’s in my changing bag? post, way back when, you will see that Childs Farm hand and body lotion worked like miracle cream on Aidan’s dry skin. Since then I’ve not stopped rubbing it on everyone I know (not literally – that would be a little odd).

I have received a lovely set of products to review so I can’t wait to share those with you soon.

Check out their twitter or facebook account for their 12 days of Christmas deals and they have free postage and packaging on orders until Christmas. When you sign up to their newsletter you will also be given a code for 30% off too! If online shopping isn’t your thing their products are also on sale in Boots, John Lewis, Waitrose and many others.

Also, the lovely people at Childs Farm have given me a rucksack full of products to giveaway. I will have to restrict this to UK and Ireland entries only – postage and all that!

Good luck everyone!!

Step into Christmas

Although I still don’t have all my decorations up I am trying to embrace the Christmas spirit as much as I can because it will be all over in no time. Aidan has no idea what’s going on but at least I will have the pictures to show him when he does.

Over the last few days my Christmas playlist has been mainly cries and whimpers from a teething baby (still none at 6 and a half months!). Alas, between these times we like to get into the festive spirit with Christmas lights on and festive music playing. Bit of ‘I wish it could be Christmas everyday’, anyone?

I’ve also been giving A paper to try and get him to rip it so that Christmas morning might be a little better received. So far he seems to love it, although he’s not great at the ripping it part but more at the using it to be a cheer leader with pompoms part.

We haven’t read any Christmas stories yet because I ended up wrapping all the Christmas books I’d got so we’re currently making our way through the Disney Magical Stories books we have. I don’t know if I cant bring myself to unwrap them so we could be reading ‘Santa is coming to Waterford’ in March. Who am I kidding Aidan will probably be in his ‘My first Christmas’ pyjamas then too. It’s clean and it fits, who’s going to see you in bed?

I haven’t baked any Christmas treats.. I haven’t even looked for any on Pinterest! How Bah-Humbug of me! I think it’s the thought of cleaning up afterwards that just puts me off. I am willing to split any Christmas treats 50/50 with whoever comes to do the washing up.

Advent Calender – well that went down like a lead balloon. I decided not to give A chocolate until Christmas Day because it would be a nice treat considering the rest will probably go over his head. This means that I get to indulge in the advent calender.. yay! Except it’s not so yay because the chocolate tastes like chalk. Here’s an idea of how bad it is, we’ve yet to open day 3.

How have you been getting in the spirit? Anyone else want to admit to festive PJs in March or will I take one for the team?

Until next time,
El x

One Lovely Blog Award

Thank you to Katy from What Katy Said for the nomination. My Christmas Tag post went up on Friday but here are seven random facts about me:

1. I was born with one kidney – it has had no major impact on my health, not even when pregnant. Despite a biology teacher once telling me I would probably never have kids and be on dialyses by my 30’s, thanks again Miss!

2. I was adopted when I was 8 weeks old. I’ve known my whole life there was no shock reveal day – which I think I’m thankful for.

3. I have 5 tattoos. The one on my ribs hurt the most.

4. I have never broken a bone (jinxed myself now I’m sure) and the only surgery I ever had was to have my appendix removed.

5. I’ve never waxed or plucked my eyebrows. I did shave a chunk out when I was around 11 and denied that I had done anything despite missing the middle of my brow. I was lucky to be born with ”penciled eyebrows”. Honestly, never knew they were such a big deal until I went to college.

6. I have an addiction to converse – I think I have around 12 pairs now. I wear them almost everyday.

7. I participated in the Guinness world record for the longest ring-a-ring-a-rosey when I was in primary school. I’m sure we’ve been beaten by now though.

Christmas Facts:

1. Every Christmas Eve my whole family goes for dinner together.

2. My favourite Christmas decoration is a wind up snowman cookie jar my granddad got me from Waterford Crystal.

3. I get new pyjamas from my Mom every Christmas Eve.

4. Christmas night ends with lots of my family gathering in my Mom’s house for a ‘social gathering’.

5. I never got a puppy or a pony for Christmas even though I asked Santa like 100 times!

6. I miss the treasure hunts my Mom used to make for me every Christmas morning (yes I’m a huge child!)

7. Every year I would search the house for my Christmas presents so my Mom would have to lock them in a cupboard and keep the key with her at all times.

(Only realised when I had done 7 random facts that it’s meant to be Christmas themed, so two for the price of one here)

Happy Days #10

I am linking up with Tiny foot steps and what katy said the lovely hosts of the Happy Days link up.

Apologies for missig out last week we had our visit to Santa Claus so the day was pretty hectic. Anyone else feel like Christmas is coming so quickly and the to-do list is just getting longer?

Out and About

Last Saturday we had our visit to Santa’s grotto which was lovely. It will be amazing when Aidan is older because there is lots of activities to do with the elves. We also got to meet Mickey Mouse there too and that was definitely Aidan’s favourite part – he just smiled at him for ages.

I got the last few Christmas presents for Aidan despite saying I wasn’t getting anymore about 100 times. I’m not getting anymore now though I mean it this time.

Fun at home

We got all our Christmas decorations up! I am super excited for Christmas now. I also started wrapping all the presents.

Aidan has been teething pretty bad the last while making fun at home very minimal. When he goes to bed though I am enjoying BBC’s Remember Me and I’m a Celeb – Jake to win I think.

Time for Me

I was really good this week, yesterday me and C spent the evening in town, went for dinner and picked up a few bits while my Mom took Aidan. We missed him but bringing a pram into town on a Friday evening this close to Christmas is best avoided!

I also got myself a Samsung Galaxy S5 – Merry Christmas to me!

Happiest Moment

When I tickled Aidan and he screams with laughter! Also, when A’s godfather arrived with his Christmas present – the carseat I had said we were looking at. Aidan is already getting spoilt and he’s only 6 months old!

Next Week

We are collecting Aidan’s playpen from Santa – excited to see that. I really want to sort the playroom before Christmas too, move al the things he doesn’t sue anymore to storage to make room for his new Christmas stuff.
