Starting to spoon feed

Yes I’ve read all the ”do not wean your baby before 17 weeks” stuff but A just was not getting enough from formula anymore, he no longer napped during the day and would still be hungry after his full 8oz bottle (resulting in m giving him 11oz a few times!). He’s on the formula for colic and constipation as he used to be lacking in the bowel movement department (thats the nicest way I think I can say that!) which is thick so I didnt feel like hungrier baby food would help.
I decided last week to start A on baby rice.. what a waste of time! I made it following the instructions on the box (1 spoon of baby rice to 10 spoons of formula/water) using Aidans regular formula and honestly it was just like feeding him his bottle with a spoon. More of it ended up on his clothes than his mouth. He got the hang of the spoon fairly quickly but the consistency of the baby rice just didnt work for me using a spoon. Fail #1!

Moving on to sunshine orange. Judging from the box, which says make it to the consistency you require, I thought we would have a better experience. To an extent it was better than our baby rice ordeal as it was more spoon friendly but its a fruit and all the leaflets say to start with vegatables as babies have a natural sweet tooth.. I am rambling again.. sorry!

If youve been reading my blog you will know I already have all that equipment to make baby food at home (Beaba haul) but before I went of making lots of baby meals I wanted to be sure Aidan was ready for purees. Yesterday happened to be shopping day so I picked up 4 Ella’s Kitchen food pouches for a puree trial run.

Saturday, Day 1; First tastes, Banana:
Ok so I kind of contradict myself here with trying fruits again but first tastes pouches only come in fruits (at least in the Tesco I went to thats all they had) so I picked up a banana and a pear. It was a huge hit! I gave A about half (35g) of the pouch and he screamed between each spoonful because I was taking to long getting from bowl to mouth! He had no upset tummy or downstairs explosions and seemed alot more content between his feeds.

Sunday, Day 2; First tastes, Banana:
I thought it must be super boring to eat the same thing again today but I guess to babies going from constant formula to a new taste is exciting but also takes time for little tummies to get used to. I heated up the second half of the banana pouch (35g) as it had been stored in the fridge over night. Aidan’s eye lit up when he saw the bowl and ate al of it, I think if he could lick the bowl he would have! He had it at 12:30 and has slept since (its 2:45), which is completely different to this time last week where he would nap for maybe one hour a day max!

So far so good! I will keep you guys updated on how it goes, cross your fingers for me.

Until next time,
El x

Beaba haul

There is just so many different things for babies when it comes to starting solid foods! I think I first saw the Beaba babycool solo on Hannah Maggs’ vlog, I initially loved the colourful design so thought Id research it a little more and all the reviews I found online raved about the babycook so that made my decision alot easier. I like to have all things matching if possible so I decided that I would buy all baby A’s baby weaning items from the Beaba range. The only Beaba stockist I could find close to me was Boots and even then they only had a very limited amount so I turned to Amazon. I use a service called Parcel Motel which basically means I get the items shipped to them under the free uk delivery and they deliver them to a P.O box type thing close to me for a much less than if I got them straight from Amazon. Anyways Im rambling again, so heres all the things I got…

So this is the babycook solo in gypsy colour scheme. I havent began to use this yet so I cant give my reviews on anything yet but from what Ive read this does everything! Reheats, defrosts, steams and blends all in the one thing so less cleaning.. woo!

This is the babycook vegatable chopping board, it cuts the fruits and vegatables into the ideal size for steaming. It also has a hole on the side which fits over the top of the babycook solo making it easier to transfer the small pieces.
As a huge pasta fan this was a must for me, its an insert for the babycook which steams rice and pasta. I thought it would be ideal for tiny baby pasta shapes.
Ok so I got two sets of these one from Amazon and another from Boots, slightly different as you will see below. They are plastic beakers which you can store food in but they also fit into the babycook meaning you can freeze food in them and defrost it in the babycook without adding extra equipment. Theyre stackable as you can see meaning they takes up very little space. These beakers are a thick plastic but look very similar to glass and are much nicer than the 4 pack I got in Boots which are the cloudy plastic type. Both are Beaba though so I dont know why theres such a difference.
This is the Ellipse bowl set which comes with a small (1st stage) and large (2nd stage) plates and a lid to keep the food warm. Its also designed with an extended edge on one side to make it easy to hold.
These are the 2nd stage weaning spoons which are a little harder plastic than the 1st stage spoons below.

So thats all I got from Amazon. I also got these 3 items from Boots…

I got two of these silicon portion dividers. It has seven 60ml portion sections which will be handy when you only want one portion you can just pop it out.
So these are the other beakers I got which can be used to freeze food and then can be defrosted directly in the babycook.

So after all these things arrived I realised I needed somewhere to store them, at least until Aidan began eating solid foods. I got this storage box in Woodies I think its a 45L one just to give perspective on how little room all these things take up.
There’s also three containers of baby rice n there too.
The babycook is not in there because Im pretty sure thats going to find a permanent home on my kitchen counter top.
Hope this helps any of you who are almost at the baby weaning stage and as soon as baby A begins to use all these I will do a review on them.

(And definitely check out  Parcel Motel, especially if you’re from Ireland you can avail of the free UK delivery on amazon.)

Until next time,

Whats in my diaper bag…

I estimate Ive watched about 30 ‘whats in my diaper bag’ videos. I seem to really enjoy having a look through other peoples bags.. does that sounds creepy? Anyways, I thought maybe its time to share whats in my bag.. its only fair really.

Well first off my diaper bag itself is a yummy mummy Pink Lining bag, not sure what the patterns called but its a flowery one, I’ll put a picture below. Its from last season, I got it back in February from pinklining.com, I think it was on sale for €70. There is so much space in this bag, it holds everything and theres still plenty of room. The bag also comes with a changing mat, wet bag and a little mirror inside. It has two insulted pockets inside which keep bottles warm.

Ok so the obvious, I usually carry about 5 nappies in there, unless I know Im going to be out for a long period of time, so currently baby A is in size 3 and I alternate between pampers baby dry and pampers acti-fit. A packet of water wipes, nappy bags and some vaseline, although I dont think Ive ever actually used it. Then theres his hand & body lotion from The Childs Farm, I love this stuff! Aidan had really dry skin on his knees, shins and onto his feet and after two apllicationg of the hand and body lotion he was back to baby soft skin! I originally bought it for the smell (grapefruit and tea tree) but will definitely be looking into some of their other products, which are all completely natural too (well 98% but whats 2% between friends?). A change of clothes and some spare bibs, teething dribbles means at least 3/4 bibs a day! I carry two bottles and formula with me everywhere even if Aidans not due a feed its better to have them than not to, I think anyway. Depending on where we’re going I will carry the pink lining changing mat. Thats everything in the main bag section. Oh and my purse lives in there too.

The front pocket I keep all my stuff in, phone, keys and my endless amount of lists! Then one side pocket has the portable steriliser, dummy clips and dummies. the other side pocket has some hand sanitiser, sun cream, spare socks and the mini mirror that comes with the changing bag.

Heres some more pictures…

My baby must haves…

As the titles says these are my must have items that i relied most on and are just an indication of some things you might find helpful in those first few weeks with a new baby. I have read several different blogs and watched hours of the ”must have” baby product videos and alot of the ones I found they featured several American brands that we cant get in Ireland so heres my list of the things I found most helpful in the first few weeks…

Graco lovin’ hug swing…

Photo taken from azbaby.co.az

This swing was the equivalent of having another pair of hands in our house. Even as Im writing this baby A is chillin’ in his swing listening to the classical music. The swing comes with 6 different speeds and a reclining seat as well as both white noise and classical sounds. It requires 3xD batteries which last us about a month which is great considering how often we use this. We got this in Smyths a few months ago on sale for €60.

Angelcare monitor ac401…

Photo taken from angelcare.co.uk

WOW! I never realised how much peace of mind this monitor gives until i had to go one night without it! The ability to look at the parent unit and know your baby is breathing is worth paying any money. Along with the movement sensor pad the Angelcare monitor comes with a night light on the nursery unit (I have to admit I havent began using this yet), a temperature indicator on the parent unit (which has been really handy with the super hot summer we’ve had this year) and the option to have battery operated or mains operated units. As of yet we haven’t experienced any false alarms and I think it is because we used a thick piece of cardboard under the sensor pad so that it was not resting on the bars of the cot. Again we got this on sale, major sale, in argos for €56 but it usually retails around €100-130. If this monitor broke I would definitely buy another one.

Milton portable steriliser…

Photo taken from milton-tm.com

Literally seconds after Aidan was born he started sucking his thumb, I had always said that if Aidan sucked his thumb I would give him a dummy/soother/pacifier (its got so many names!). My logic behind this is that you can take a dummy away at some point but you can never take away his thumb. Anyway, this portable steriliser is specifically for dummies. It contains two sponges that absorb the steilising fluid (one mini Milton sterilising tablet dissolved in water) and you just place the dummy into these sponges for 10 minutes and its all good to go again. I imagine this will get even more use as he gets older and his hand-eye coordination improves and he figures out how to throw his dummy in tantrums.. I cant wait! I dont rememer where we actually got this but I think they retail around €10.

Doctor browns bottles…

Photo taken from drbrownsbaby.com

In the first few weeks Aidan suffered with wind really badly, he would wake at 6am screaming in pain which was really hard to watch. After lots of internet searching I found several food alternatives and drops etc., but with Aidan really enjoying his current food I wanted to avoid changing it if possible so Dr Browns bottles seemed to be the best option for us to try. I began using them around 4pm one day and by the next night Aidan had no pain. They would be one of the first things I would recommend for a new mom buying the essentials. We bought 6 8oz bottles in boots for around €45.

Water wipes…

Photo taken from waterwipes.com

As you can probably tell from the name, these wipes are 99.9% water and 0.1% fruit extract meaning there’s no chemicals! Baby A has never had a nappy rash and I really think Water Wipes are to thank for that. They’re suitable from birth as they’re as gentle as cotton wool and water. They retail at €2.99 but can always be found on sale at €2. I remember reading somewhere that the cheaper the wipes the more chemicals they contain which may be true in some cases but €2 and no chemicals seems good to me.

Nelson’s Teetha Teething granules…

Photo taken from nelsonsnaturalworld.com

I almost forgot to mention these as we’ve only started to use them over the last few weeks. These are a completely natural pain relief for teething and are suitable from birth. When baby A began teething around 10 weeks we struggled to find something suitable for babies under 4 months who were teething, I had never heard of teething granules before. One sachet onto his gums relieves his pain almost instantly and also initiates a sucking reflex which as the nurse at his first appointment told me releases natural pain killers in their system.. double win!

Baby items I never used…

This blog seemed like the obvious follow on to my must haves, a list of the items I found least helpful/ unnecessary for baby A. Like most FTMs I bought everything a baby could ever need, a lot of which have yet to be used!

Newborn sized clothes…

If you’ve read my previous blogs you will already know that Aidan was 8 pounds 11 ounces when he was born meaning that any newborn sizes I got were useless. My hospital advises you wash all clothes before the baby wears them meaning I couldn’t return anything. I would advise maybe buy one pack of new born sleepsuits/onesies just in case but you can always get more after you know your babies weight.

Moses basket…

Aidan slept 19 nights in his Moses basket, and I use the term slept very loosely. Some newborns have a sleep reflex meaning that the throw theirs arms and legs out in their sleep, resulting in baby A hitting the sides of his Moses basket and waking himself up. Aidan’s been in a cot since he was 3 weeks and now sleeps for 12 hours much more comfortably.

Baby bath…

I guess this is linked with the large birth weight, baby A was restricted in his baby bath and didn’t enjoy bath time as a result. We got a bath sponge (€5 in smyths) and use it in our main bath which has been a much better experience! I think baby A might be a little claustrophobic too, his Moses basket, baby bath and carrycot section of his stroller were total wastes of money for him.

Changing table…

They have a changing table that matches his nursery furniture? I must own it! A piece of furniture that’s sole purpose is as a changing station probably won’t get the same use as say a dresser with a changing mat on top, or some even come with a removable changing station on top. Something that can be used once the baby grows out of nappies is a much better investment, in my opinion.

Getting to know baby A…

So all as you already know if you’ve read my first blog Aidan was born on May 29th meaning that he is 12 weeks old today! *wipes away sad mommy tears* In one way it feels like hes been here my entire life and in another its like only last week we brought cheap jerseys him home. Over the last 12 weeks baby A has changed everyday and each day does something new to amaze me!

From birth to now…

When baby A was born he weighed 8lb 11oz and at his last check up, early last week, he now weighs 13.5lbs.. and I am really starting to feel it! I was really lucky that Aidan took to the Chairs formula Ultrabook from wholesale jerseys the very beginning and now takes 4 full 8oz bottles cheap nba jerseys a day.

Aidan the day after he was born

From around 7 weeks old baby A began sleeping for 8 hours at night which in the last two weeks has reached 12 hours.. woo! I have no idea how it happened other than Aidan decided one day to take all his bottles 3 hours apart and slept all night. With the long stretch of sleep at night he hardly sleeps at all during the day and requires alot more stimulation and interaction. which is fine by me because I could spend all day making him smile.
Speaking of smiling, its all he does now. The proper kind not the questionable gas ones. He finds everything funny but shocked faces seem to be his biggest weakness! There is no feeling like seeing your baby cheap nba jerseys smile. His huge smile first thing in the morning makes me happier than all the money in the world could. (soppy mom moment.. sorry)

Baby A never stops smiling.

Also this month Ive been introduced to the world of teething babies (i.e., excessive drooling and the overwhelming desire to put EVERYTHING in their mouths). Aidan hasnt quite mastered how to manuver certain object into his mouth which has resulted in a current love/hate situation with Sophie the giraffe. You can guarentee though that if he isnt eating that he will be chewing his fist.. constantly!

Just like all the clichés say, the last 12 weeks really has flown by and although Im sure there so many small achievements Ive forgotten to by mention thats all for getting to know baby A/ three month update.

Such a difference from the baby I brought home from the hospital

How it all began…

As a first time mom I have spent hours searching the Internet to know if everything baby A does is ”normal” (if such thing exists in the world of babies), what are the ”must have” baby products and mostly just enjoying reading about how other first time moms and dad are enjoying their new adventure. I discovered many mommy bloggers and vloggers and thought of how great it will be for them to look back in several years and be able to remember what was happening when *insert babies name here* was *insert babies age here* and how they felt at that time.. probably tired if we’re honest. Knowing how easily I lose things (i.e. put them somewhere so safe even I don’t think to look there again.), I knew I could never document these things on paper. Also, I have lost faith in storing documents solely on laptops and the likes, I have lost way too much college material that way. USB sticks also don’t work refer back to my safe place ordeals! So I decided why not have a copy of everything saved online.. surely I cant lose the Internet.. right?!

So here goes…

On May 29th 2014 baby A was born.
Aidan was born weighing 8 pounds 11 oz! I did not expect him to be so big considering my bump wasn’t huge.. even though at the time i felt MASSIVE! Myself and baby A’s dad weren’t big babies either so I thought (or maybe hoped) he was going to weigh about 7- 7.5 pounds… I was mistaken! From the minute he was born there was no denying that he was his dads twin! Which made for one extra happy Daddy.
All things birth wise went great.. quick but great.

Labour & Delivery…

So after many episodes of one born every minute, an anti natal class and a doctors appointment the previous day to schedule my induction I thought I knew exactly how this would plan out but as I’ve learned everyday since baby A’s gotten here with babies you NEVER know how things are going to plan out.
Wednesday morning went as normal as can be expected at 41 weeks pregnant. We took a trip into town to get out of the house before Clayton went to work. I called to my Mams house for the evening to avoid going crazy at home alone (over due mommas will know how this feels). In the middle of Britain’s got Talent, around 8pm, my waters broke and by broke I mean like in movies.. GUSH! So after a shower I called the hospital who told me to come in straight away and bring my bags because I wouldn’t be going home without my baby.. that was a scary sentence to hear! All I could think of was that I didn’t get all the cleaning done before baby A arrived.. stupid nesting had taken over my life! I called Clayton at 9 to tell him it was time to have a baby.. at first he didn’t believe me because I had zero signs when he left that afternoon. We arrived at the hospital about 9:30pm and after some monitoring I was admitted around 11:15pm with no pain and was told if nothing happened within 24 hours I would be induced. At this point Clayton returned home as they assured him it would be a long wait.. turns out they were mistaken too!
Around 11:30pm I started to get cramps and called the nurse who again hooked me up to a fetal monitor and said ”Are you starting to feel mild pains?” I remember thinking if these are mild I am in for some torture! After a ‘pop’ and huge gush she decided to check me. 8cm! ”You better call your partner and tell him to meet you in delivery”. Again, Clayton initially didn’t believe me (now may be a good time to say that he is somewhat gullible and I may sometimes use that for my own entertainment). I arrived at the delivery suite at 00:00. After about an hour, which felt like 10 minutes, of pushing baby A arrived! And its true you do forget about any pain straight away when you see their face. After exactly 41 weeks of being pregnant it was all over and now I am a mom, let the fun begin…..
